Mercury in Retro Love by Janie Emaus

Janie Emaus is one of the kick ass writers that I hang with over at In The Powder Room. She is an amazing lady and she has just written a fabulous piece of teen chick lit akin to the great doyenne of teen chick lit Judy Blume……..

#Dreams sequence back to me reading Are You There God It’s Me Margaret and all other Blume classics#

And I was lucky enough to interview her….

What’s the book about?
It’s a story about crushes, conflicts and astrological confusions. Fifteen-year-old astrologer, Emma, finally sees that it is her time for a boyfriend. But Mercury is going Retrograde in a few weeks and she knows what that means. It’s like an astrological PMS. Not a good time to start a relationship. She has to get one BEFORE it goes retrograde. Using her school newspaper column, Emmastrology, she lands the perfect guy. Or she thinks He’s a Capricorn. She’s a Taurus. Both earth signs. But as time passes, she realizes he’s not so perfect as he seems. And now she has to break up with him BEFORE Mercury goes Retrograde. Along the way, she gets in trouble with her best friends and her father.

Where did you idea come from?
I’ve always been fascinated with Astrology and during the time that I wrote this book, I worked with the well-known astrologer, Terence Guardino. One day we were talking about love and teenagers and the idea started percolating in my mind.

What’s your star sign?
Taurus, an earth sign.

What’s your husband’s star sign? Are you a good match?
My husband is an Aquarius. The moon was in Aquarius the day I was born. One of the best connections between charts is having the woman’s moon in the same sign as the man’s sun sign. But astrology aside, we’ve been together over thirty years so something must be working.

Do you believe in astrology?
Yes, to some extent. But I don’t run my life by it. Now, I do read my horoscope everyday.

Who is the book written for?
I’d say 12-15 year olds, primarily. It’s a sweet romance. But anyone interested in astrology will enjoy it. I’ve gotten some good reviews on Amazon. One person compared me to Judy Blume. That’s the greatest compliment ever.

Where are you from?
Los Angeles.

When did you start writing?
About a million years ago. I wrote my first short story in 4th grade and haven’t stopped since.

When is it available? Which formats?
It’s available now in all formats: Kindle, Nook, Smashwords and print. You can buy the print version directly from the website and they are offering a discount spin the wheel game.

Here is an excerpt.

At the end of every chapter, Emma writes in her astrological journal. Here is one of them:

Astrological Journal
Fact: Mercury helps you communicate.
Theory Six: The chemistry between a Capricorn and a Taurus is more powerful than anything in the universe
Proof: I communicated by falling flat on my face!

Janie very kindly set me up with an interview with Terence so that I could have my first ever astrology reading. We did it via skype and it was very interesting the observations he made. He said that because I had been born so close to midnight that it made me an unusual Capricorn because I had a rebellious, independent nature that wanted a relationship but at the same time wanted freedom. (Well ain’t that the truth.) In summary he said that I was destined to write or being in marketing or travel – well I do all three. He also said that I wasn’t out of the woods yet – the marathon continues but that there would be light at the end of the tunnel next year! I am hanging in there! But the best and most exciting prediction was that in 2016 I was going to be involved is some sort of global showbiz project that was going to be very successful. Yes, you heard it here first 2016 Oscars here I come – who shall I wear?

I’ve ordered the print version and just got word that it’s on its way! Even though I was around during the book’s gestation, I can’t wait to read it in final, book form.
