The Pirates – In an Adventure with Scientists

The Grenade wants to be animator when he grows up. Well, he actually wants to be a werewolf and making battle scenes using clay figures and filming them is more of a hobby. To be honest he has more chance of being an animator then he has of becoming a werewolf. But then you can always rely on parents to stamp on your dreams! Anyhoo, we leapt at the chance to attend a clay model making workshop with Aardman, the makers of Wallace & Gromit. It was a superb way to close the holidays and to spend some one-to-one with my boy.

We met Jim Parkyn, the head pirate, I mean head model maker at Aardman, who had crafted many of the characters and components in the film The Pirates – In an Adventure with Scientists. After a slap up feast, including a large hank of ham, true pirate fayre we set to work on crafting our Polly the Dodo, one of the main characters in the film.

It was great fun and it was interesting to see everyone’s take on Polly as each and every one of us christened her with our own style. Jim introduced the Grenade to Aardman’s new animation software – http://www.animate-it.com which for £1.99 you can use on an Ipad or Ipod. The Grenade can’t wait to start using it.

The day was rounded off with a viewing of the film – The Pirates! – In An Adventure With Scientists which was great. We all left feeling warm and fuzzy inside clutching our Polly Dodos. Happy days indeed. What a triumphant way to finish off the summer holidays.

The Pirates! – In An Adventure With Scientists is released on DVD on the 10th September.

In The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists 3D, Hugh Grant stars in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas.

With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London.

Along the way they battle a diabolical queen (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure!
