Real Life: Do Not Unfriend Your Facebook Foes – General Election 8th June 2017

Yesterday, Teresa May out of the blue, announced the date of a snap General Election and so the timing for this post couldn’t be better as it’s time to get out of the echo chamber and #VoteSmart #VotePolitics #NotParty

Recently, I got caught up in a Facebook engagement with a card carrying Trumpkin who spent most of the conversation insulting me and telling me what I did and didn’t know. I have never met him. He is the husband of my pro-life republican American friend, who I met when she lived in the UK and was married to someone else. During her time living in the UK, it was only as we parted ways did she reveal these elements of her political perspective.

The problem with Facebook culling those who oppose your ideas is that you end up living with the delusion that everyone is in agreement with your perspective. It’s useful to endure the opposition so you can learn why they think the way they do and examine the validity. There is always some truth in there. Stay strong and don’t bite but learn instead. #IMHO”

Turns out Trumpkins don’t much like the Huff Post after I naughtily baited them with a Huffington post article:

“Clare….. no WONDER your perspective is what it is…. feed your “intellect” garbage, and your perspective will be rubbish, as well. The Huffiington Post? Try to find some FACTS…… how many “immigrants” to your country from Syria are women and children, fleeing from “persecution” vice the percentage of combat-aged men that have emigrated into the western cultures….of course, you don’t want to present those “statistics”. Your naivete is showing. At least in this country, we are personally well-armed, so that when that people like you overwhelm the system, we can still “correct” things, by personal force, if necessary.  🙂 Who’s protecting you from wearing a hijab??”

Followed by:

“As Thomas Jefferson said, “The tree of LIBERTY must be watered by the blood of PATRIOTS”…. enjoy your imagined “security” on your little island while you invite the jihadists in and embrace them. Good for me and my fellow PATRIOTS, we are still well personally well-armed!!! Freedom will succeed!”

A relative of his then pitched in with a:

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it’s natural manure.”

Cor blimey, guvnor, those damn Trumpkins are preparing for a civil war.

Following the engagement my Facebooks status read, The problem with Facebook culling those who oppose your ideas is that you end up living with the delusion that everyone is in agreement with your perspective. It’s useful to endure the opposition so you can learn why they think the way they do and examine the validity. There is always some truth in there. The challenges of my ‘birds of a feather’ stick together social media usage policy is that I have been living in an echo chamber where my own views are emulated so therefore I am surprised when the results don’t go my way. I have watched the UKIPer, Brexiteers and Trumpkins be decimated on social media platforms by the shouty liberal decrying their opponents making us feel safe that the right-on side will be victorious. Yet it’s been a hat-trick of disappointment – the General Election, Brexit and now the tyrannical Trump.

These are the democratically chosen paths. It is easy to be a loud liberal and protest your ‘cares’ but the shadows whisper into the ears of the voting silent right and unites them with the unspoken resentment about who is deserving and who is not.

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves. There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. Everyone carries a Shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. When an inner situation is not made conscious, it appears outside as fate.”

~ Carl G. Jung

As Sun Tzu reminds us: “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
