Give them some practical support
Going through a divorce can be a difficult and stressful time. This can make it difficult for someone going through it to think clearly and take some of the more practical steps they need to take right now. From helping them find a divorce lawyer to helping them move home, there are many different things you can do to help your friend get through this time. Ask them what they need and do your best to be there for them.
Listen
More than anything, your friend likely needs someone to listen to them. Give your friend the chance to get things off their chest and explain what they’re feeling. You may find yourselves going around in circles, but it will help them go through the motions. There are a lot of ways you can be a good listener, and giving your friend the space to talk without judgement could be just what they need right now to feel better.
Provide distractions
Keeping busy can be a good distraction for someone going through a divorce. Being part of a couple to being alone can be quite an adjustment, so if you and other friends can rally around to keep your friend busy, you could provide them with a lot of welcome distractions at this time. Make plans, be there to hang out and give them some things to get excited about. This could be an incredible time for both of you, helping you create wonderful new memories together.
Support them for the long-haul
Getting over a divorce can be a long process, so it’s important that you’re not only there at the beginning, but are there for the long haul too. By showing up time and time again, you can remain a consistent source of support and show yourself to be a true friend. Remember to check in on them and ask how they’re doing – even if it seems like they’re fine. There may be times when they’re experiencing new challenges or lows, but teaching them how to be positive during these tough times could be the light they need.
It’s not easy to see a friend going through a difficult time, but being there for them is the best thing you can do to help them feel better. Being a good friend right now involves providing emotional support, a shoulder to cry on, and someone to help remind them of the good things in life too. While there may be a tough road ahead, things will be a little easier for your friend with you by your side.
